Rio Futaleufu, Patagonia, Chile

Two months in South America collaborating once again with Earth River Expeditions on the Rio Futaleufu in Patagonia, Chile, Carr captured the exhilarating whitewater and majesty of the glacial, blue waters of this class V+ river in an incredible portfolio of images.  Known as the Everest of commercial whitewater, the Rio Futaleufu is born from the lakes in Los Alerces National Park in Argentina, then crosses the Andes Mountains into the Aysen region of Chile creating one of the most beautiful and extreme whitewater rivers in the world.

Earth River partners, Eric Hertz and Robert Currie ran the first complete raft descent of the Rio Futaleufu in 1990 pioneering commercial rafting there.  In the forefront of river conservation and dedicated to raising public awareness to the multitude of issues facing rivers worldwide, Earth River is committed to protecting the Rio Futaleufu from a proposed hydroelectric project by Chile’s largest electric company, and from the invasive freshwater algae, didymo phenia, an emerging worldwide environmental problem.

Sacred Headwaters

It is not often a photographer has the opportunity to explore lands which have rarely, if ever, been captured by the lens of a camera.  Collaborating with National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Wade Davis and the International League of Conservation Photographers (iLCP), Carr Clifton has been fortunate enough to have just returned from this exact experience in the Sacred Headwaters of British Columbia.

Home to Canada’s most important salmon rivers, the Stikine, Skeena and Nass, and one of North America’s largest predator-prey ecosystems, the Sacred Headwaters is being threatened by large scale industrial development, including copper strip mines and coal-methane gas extraction.  The iLCP’s mission was to obtain a comprehensive portrait of the Sacred Headwaters giving voice to the historical, cultural and ecological significance of this region.

Trekking hundreds of miles of back country trails and roads, and logging ten helicopter flights, Carr captured some of the most beautiful and endangered lands in North America, covering a vast and mostly roadless area of approximately 150,000 square miles.

With over 22,000 exposures, Carr’s portfolio of this incredible region has been edited down to 270 stunning images.  From aerials of the region’s rivers and valleys, to the remote lakes, mountains and glaciers, this collection of remarkable images conveys the importance of protecting this extraordinary place.
